Step 6 · Measure

AI visibility: become the source AI answers name

Traze measures per engine whether ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and AI Overviews mention your brand, and builds the content that changes it.

More and more customers put their question to an AI instead of Google. It gives one answer and names a few sources. Generative engine optimization (GEO) is the work of being one of those sources. Traze makes it measurable with a fixed question set per topic, tracks six engines week after week and turns every missed mention into a concrete page or change.

What you get · concretely

What AI visibility in Traze includes

  • 01

    Question set per topic

For every topic in your strategy Traze assembles 10 to 50 questions phrased the way customers ask an AI: exploring, comparing and buying. You can add or remove questions.

  • 02

    Measurement per AI engine

Every question is put to ChatGPT, Google AI Overviews, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Copilot every week. For each answer Traze records whether you are mentioned, whether your domain is linked as a source and where in the answer.

  • 03

    Share of voice and citations

Per engine and per topic you see your share of the answers next to your competitors', split into mentions (your name is in the text) and citations (your page is the source).

  • 04

    Entities and direct answers

Traze rewrites or creates pages so every important question is answered in the first paragraph, with unambiguous entities (who, what, where, for whom) and consistent naming across your whole site.

  • 05

    llms.txt and AI crawlers

A maintained llms.txt listing your most important pages, and robots rules that deliberately allow or block GPTBot, PerplexityBot, ClaudeBot and Google-Extended. You set the policy, Traze keeps it current and reports blocks.

  • 06

    Source analysis and actions

For every question where you are missing, Traze sees which sources are cited instead and why. That becomes a task in the content calendar: a new page, an addition or a correction of facts.

What it is

What AI visibility is, and what it is not

AI visibility is the degree to which AI assistants mention your brand or use your pages as a source when someone asks a question in your market. It differs from a ranking: an AI answer has no ten blue links, just one text with at most a handful of sources. You are in it, or you are not.

Every engine works differently. ChatGPT and Copilot search the live web for current questions and otherwise lean on what the model saw during training. Perplexity always searches and cites almost every sentence. Google AI Overviews and Gemini draw on the Google index and often surface the same sources as the top of the search results. That is why Traze measures per engine, not with one averaged number.

GEO is not a trick bolted onto SEO. The pages AI engines cite are almost always pages that are also easy to find: clear, factual, with a visible author and organisation behind them. What changes is the shape: a direct answer at the top, definitions a model can lift, tables and lists it can read, and entities that are named the same way everywhere. How Traze writes pages AI can cite.

And what it is not: you cannot pay an AI to mention you, and you cannot 'optimise' the model. You can only become the best available source for the questions that matter, and measure whether that is working. Read the full measurement method.

How it works · step by step

How Traze measures and improves AI visibility

  1. Step 1

    Build the question set

From your brand profile, search data and the questions customers already ask (support, sales, 'People also ask'), Traze builds a fixed set of prompts per topic. Every prompt gets an intent: explore, compare or buy. You approve the set, so you measure what actually counts.

  2. Step 2

    Query weekly

Every prompt goes to six engines each week, in the language and country of your market, without a login or chat history, and several times per engine because answers vary. Traze stores the full answer, the date and the sources, so every number can be traced back.

  3. Step 3

    Score: mention, citation, position

For each answer Traze records whether your brand is named, whether one of your pages is linked as a source, where in the answer it appears, and which competitors are present. Share of voice is the share of answers that include your brand, per engine and per topic.

  4. Step 4

    Diagnose every missed question

For every question without your brand, Traze compares the cited sources with your pages: is the topic missing, is the answer not direct enough, are the entities inconsistent, or is the page unreachable for AI crawlers? Each cause gets a different action.

  5. Step 5

    Adjust content and structure

Traze writes new pages or restructures existing ones: a direct answer in the first paragraph, definition blocks, FAQs with schema, consistent brand and product names, and an llms.txt that points to your key pages. Everything goes through the normal approval and publishing into your CMS.

  6. Step 6

    Re-measure and adjust

After publishing, the question set keeps running. Per engine you see when a mention appears, whether it sticks, and which pages serve as a source most often. Whatever has not moved after a few weeks returns to the calendar with a different approach.

Why it matters

Why this matters now

A growing share of the questions in your market is answered without a click: in an AI Overview above the search results, or in a chat that summarises the answer. Whoever is not named there does not exist for that customer in that moment, however good the rankings are. Measuring where you stand is the first step; without measurement GEO stays an opinion.

The advantage of starting now is that most markets are still open. AI engines cite relatively few sources per question and reuse those sources across many questions. One well-built page can show up in dozens of answers. That keeps the investment per mention low, as long as you know which questions you are missing. Check for free who wins your market in AI answers today.

And it works together with classic SEO: the same pages AI cites also gain positions in Google. Traze measures both in one dashboard, so you see what a page returns in clicks and in mentions. See how performance monitoring combines rankings and AI visibility.

Use cases · where it works

Where AI visibility returns the most

  • Web shops with comparable products

Questions like 'which ... is best for ...' are asked to AI at scale. Buying guides and comparison pages with clear specifications become the source for dozens of product questions at once.

  • B2B and SaaS

'Best tool for X' and 'X versus Y' are the new shortlists. Comparison and use-case pages with factual claims and pricing put you on that shortlist.

  • Service providers with a region

'Good dentist in Utrecht' or 'employment lawyer in Antwerp' gets a short list of names in AI answers. Location pages with consistent address details, reviews and schema make you one of those names.

  • Knowledge-heavy sectors

Finance, healthcare and manufacturing: here engines prefer sources with a clear author, organisation and references. That is exactly what Traze builds into the pages.

  • Brands with several markets and languages

Who gets cited differs per country and language. Traze measures per market and keeps entities consistent across languages, so the brand stays the same everywhere.

Honestly · risks and limits

Honest about the limits

AI answers vary. The same question returns a different source list on Monday than on Friday. That is why Traze samples several times per engine and shows trends over weeks, not daily figures. One screenshot proves nothing, in either direction.

Some engines draw part of their answer from training data; that only changes with a new model version. Do not expect an effect there within weeks. Engines that search live (Perplexity, AI Overviews, ChatGPT with search) can respond to new, well-built pages within weeks.

Traze measures with its own automated queries. These are not official figures from the engines themselves; they do not publish any. The method is public, so you know exactly what a number means and what it does not.

And: being mentioned is not revenue. Traze links mentions to the traffic and conversions in your analytics, but the last step, whether an AI user becomes a customer, still depends on your offer and your site.

Frequently asked questions

A mention means your brand or product name appears in the answer. A citation means a page on your domain is linked as a source. Citations are rarer and more valuable: they send traffic and confirm the engine actually read your page. Traze measures both separately and shows them side by side.
