Google Merchant Center

Google Merchant Center is the platform where online stores upload their product feed so products can appear in Google Shopping, free product listings and, increasingly, AI answers.

Definition

Google Merchant Center is the free platform through which webshops supply their product data to Google, so products can appear in Google Shopping, in the free product listings in the search results and the Shopping tab, in Google Images, YouTube and Maps, and as a source of product information in AI Overviews and AI Mode. You connect a product feed to it, or let Google fetch the products from your site itself.

Merchant Center is the bridge between your catalogue and every place where Google shows products. Since 2020, product listings in Google Shopping have been free, which turned the platform from an advertising tool into an organic channel. A well-populated feed delivers visibility without media budget; the same feed also powers Shopping ads and Performance Max campaigns if you run them.

The quality of the product data determines everything. Every product listing has a unique ID, title, description, link, image, price, availability and, for most categories, a GTIN or brand and MPN. Titles that start with brand, product type and the key attributes (size, colour, material) rank better in Shopping than creative names. Google checks whether price and stock in the feed match the landing page; mismatches lead to product disapprovals or, when repeated, account suspension.

The platform also offers diagnostics: which products are disapproved and why, which missing attributes limit visibility, how your prices compare to competitors and which products receive the most clicks. The product performance reports and the best sellers insights are useful for SEO decisions: which products and categories deserve better pages and more content?

For GEO, Merchant Center is becoming more important, because Google's AI answers to product questions ('which robot vacuum is best under 400 euros') draw on the Shopping Graph built from these feeds. A complete, current feed with Product schema on the matching pages increases the chance that your products appear in those answers. Traze keeps Product schema and product pages aligned with the feed and flags price and stock differences that lead to disapprovals.

Yes. Creating an account, connecting a feed and showing free product listings costs nothing. You only pay if you also use the feed for Shopping ads or Performance Max.
