People Also Ask (PAA) is the block in Google's search results with expandable follow-up questions related to the original query. Behind each question sits a short answer from a web page, with a link to the source. When you open a question, Google loads new questions beneath it, so the block can grow endlessly.
PAA is valuable for two reasons. First, it is the largest free source of real questions people ask about a subject, ordered by Google itself based on search behaviour. Anyone building a topical map or keyword cluster starts here. Second, it is a visibility opportunity: a page that appears in PAA occupies a prominent spot in the results, even if it does not organically rank in the top three.
The answers in PAA are chosen in the same way as featured snippets. Google looks for a passage that answers the question directly: a heading with the question, followed by a paragraph of two to four sentences, a list or a table. Pages that answer several related questions briefly and concretely often appear for multiple PAA questions at once. An FAQ section with real questions is therefore one of the most effective parts of a page.
Since AI Overviews and AI Mode, PAA has become less prominent or occasionally absent in certain search results, because the AI summary already answers those follow-up questions. Where the block appears, it remains a strong source of questions and visibility. The questions themselves are also nearly identical to the follow-up questions people ask ChatGPT or Gemini, which makes PAA research directly usable for generative engine optimization.
